Nordic Semiconductor Acquires Neuton.AI to Bring Scalable, Ultra-Low-Power AI to the Edge
Nordic Semiconductor, a leader in ultra-low-power wireless technology, is doubling down on AI at the edge. The company has acquired the core assets and intellectual property of Neuton.AI, a breakthrough platform in fully automated TinyML, marking a pivotal leap for scalable machine learning in power- and memory-constrained environments.
The move combines Nordic’s nRF54 Series wireless SoCs with Neuton’s patented, ultra-compact neural network framework—enabling AI models as small as 5KB that run efficiently on 8-, 16-, and 32-bit microcontrollers, no data science expertise required.
“This is a generational leap in embedded compute power and efficiency,” said Vegard Wollan, CEO of Nordic Semiconductor. “We’re empowering developers to build a new class of always-on, AI-powered devices—smaller, faster, and more power-efficient than ever.”
Why It Matters: TinyML Without the Trade-Offs
Neuton.AI’s framework stands out by automating model creation without predefined architectures or manual tuning. The result:
- Up to 10x smaller and faster models
- Minimal resource usage (power, memory, compute)
- No data science or ML expertise needed
From smart health monitors and predictive maintenance to industrial IoT and gesture recognition, Neuton’s platform brings plug-and-play AI to the edge—where real-time intelligence meets stringent efficiency demands.
Strategic Synergy: Low Power Meets Machine Learning
With this acquisition, Nordic unlocks a powerful synergy between wireless connectivity and edge intelligence:
- nRF54 Series + Neuton.AI = Always-on, ML-powered devices that are scalable and power-optimized
- Developers can build applications that deliver real-time insight at the edge without centralized cloud processing
- Supports full Nordic SoC portfolio—from wearables to industrial sensors
“We’re redefining what’s possible in ultra-efficient machine learning,” added Øyvind Strøm, EVP of Short-Range at Nordic. “This deal will help embedded AI become more accessible, more scalable, and far easier to deploy.”
A Growing Market for Edge Intelligence
According to industry projections, TinyML chipsets are expected to hit $5.9 billion by 2030. This acquisition positions Nordic to become a go-to platform for developer-ready AI/ML at scale—targeting high-growth use cases like:
- Smart wearables and healthcare devices
- Factory automation and predictive maintenance
- Home automation and connected consumer tech
- Next-gen IoT and sensor nodes
What’s Next: Integration Roadmap and Continuity
The acquisition includes all IP and core technology from Neuton.AI, plus a team of 13 engineers and data scientists. The Neuton.AI brand and platform will continue operating during the integration phase, ensuring zero disruption for current users and partners.
