Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) is making bold moves to become the backbone of the AI economy. With a multi-billion-dollar expansion already underway, the telecom giant plans to add 34 million new intercity fiber miles by 2028, bringing its total to 47 million miles. That’s enough fiber to wrap around the Earth nearly twice—and a clear signal that AI is driving network infrastructure like never before.

“AI is fueling a surge in network demand like we’ve never seen,” said Kye Prigg, Lumen’s EVP of enterprise operations. “We plan to more than double the size of our U.S. network, giving customers the scale, speed, and reliability to innovate without limits.”

Rapid Fiber Expansion and Network Upgrades

2025 is already shaping up as a milestone year for Lumen. The company has:

  • Deployed 2.2M new fiber miles, bringing the total to 16.6M this year alone, using next-gen Corning fiber that packs twice the capacity into existing conduits.
  • Built 176 In-Line Amplifier (ILA) sites—giant signal boosters designed for future upgrades and triple the power density of traditional shelters.
  • Expanded conduit access with IRU deployments across 55 routes, giving Lumen more control and flexibility for future fiber additions.
  • Increased network capacity by 5.9+ Pbps, ensuring AI workloads can move massive datasets with minimal lag.
  • Boosted speeds up to 400Gbps across clouds, data centers, and metro networks, with a $100M investment driving high-performance connectivity.

Private Connectivity Fabric: Tailored for AI

At the heart of this expansion is Lumen’s Private Connectivity Fabric (PCF). With 25% lower optical loss and 60% more capacity than traditional designs, the PCF reduces latency to under five milliseconds at the edge and covers 97% of U.S. business demand. Diverse routes connect over 50 major cities, positioning Lumen as the largest ultra-low-loss intercity fiber network in North America.

“Every mile of new fiber and capacity upgrade adds to the strength of our Private Connectivity Fabric,” Prigg added. “We’re laying the foundation for the AI economy.”

Implications for the AI Infrastructure Race

Lumen’s expansion comes at a time when AI workloads are straining enterprise networks. Competitors like Zayo, AT&T, and Verizon are also beefing up fiber and cloud connectivity, but Lumen’s aggressive build and PCF design could give it an edge for low-latency, high-capacity AI services. Enterprises adopting AI-heavy applications—from machine learning pipelines to real-time analytics—will likely favor networks that can scale without bottlenecks.

With 400Gbps speeds and a massive fiber footprint, Lumen isn’t just keeping pace—it’s attempting to set the standard for AI-ready networks in the U.S.. The company is even documenting its progress through a three-part docuseries showcasing the “Big Build,” signaling transparency and confidence in its ambitious rollout.

For enterprises, this means the future of AI infrastructure is increasingly dependent on robust, scalable networks, and Lumen is betting big on being the go-to provider.
