For decades, law firms competed for visibility on Google through rankings, backlinks and local search. That playbook is changing as consumers increasingly use AI-powered tools to research businesses and services. Brown & Crouppen has selected Performance Marketing Advisors (PMA Group) to manage its SEO and AI visibility strategy as the personal injury firm looks to adapt its digital acquisition strategy to this new search environment.
The way consumers find a lawyer is becoming less predictable.
A prospective client might still search Google for a personal injury attorney, but increasingly, the research process can include AI-powered search experiences that summarize providers, answer questions and recommend businesses without sending users through the traditional list of blue links.
That shift is forcing law firms to reconsider what “search visibility” means.
Brown & Crouppen, a personal injury law firm with more than 200 legal professionals and nine full-service offices across the St. Louis and Kansas City markets, has selected Performance Marketing Advisors (PMA Group) to lead its SEO and AI visibility strategy.
The engagement will focus on maintaining the firm’s organic search presence while expanding its visibility across emerging AI-powered discovery platforms.
Founded in 1979, Brown & Crouppen says it has recovered more than $2 billion for clients. Its decision to invest in AI search visibility illustrates a broader challenge facing established service businesses: decades of brand authority do not automatically translate into visibility inside systems that use different mechanisms to retrieve and summarize information.
Traditional SEO has largely revolved around technical website quality, relevant content, backlinks, local signals and search rankings. AI-generated search introduces another layer.
Large language models and AI search systems can synthesize information from multiple sources and generate answers rather than simply displaying ranked webpages. That means businesses increasingly need to make their expertise, reputation and factual information understandable and discoverable across the wider digital ecosystem.
PMA Group will work with Brown & Crouppen’s marketing team on technical SEO, content strategy, local search, digital authority, website performance and attribution.
The company says it has conducted more than 40 digital performance and SEO audits for law firms and has provided SEO and AI content optimization services to other clients.
For Brown & Crouppen, the immediate objective is not to abandon conventional search. Google remains an important discovery channel for legal services, where local intent and high-value queries can lead directly to consultations.
Instead, the strategy reflects an emerging search-everywhere model.
Consumers researching a law firm may encounter information through Google Search, Google Maps, social platforms, legal directories, AI assistants and increasingly AI-native search products. The information presented by these systems can influence a consumer before they ever visit a firm’s website.
That creates a difficult measurement problem.
A traditional SEO campaign can track rankings, organic traffic and conversions. AI visibility is harder to measure because an organization can be mentioned in an AI-generated response without receiving a conventional click. Attribution therefore becomes more important, particularly for businesses such as law firms where a single qualified inquiry can have considerably more commercial value than a large volume of low-intent traffic.
PMA Group says its work with Brown & Crouppen will therefore include advanced attribution alongside its SEO and content efforts.
“We’re focused on making sure Brown & Crouppen remains visible as people increasingly use new ways to research and choose a law firm,” said Justin Moreno, CEO and chief consultant at PMA Group.
The development is part of a larger transformation underway in digital marketing.
Google is integrating generative AI into search through AI Overviews and other AI-powered experiences, while Microsoft has incorporated AI into Bing and Copilot. OpenAI and other AI providers are also changing how users interact with information online.
For marketers, this creates a distinction between search engine optimization and AI visibility optimization.
The two overlap, but they are not identical. Strong technical SEO, authoritative content and structured information can help a company become more discoverable, but AI systems also depend on the quality and consistency of information available across the broader web.
That is particularly important in legal services.
Legal marketing operates in a high-trust environment where consumers are often making decisions under stressful circumstances. Expertise, location, practice areas, reputation and evidence of credibility can all affect the choice of a firm.
Simply publishing more AI-generated content is unlikely to solve that problem. Firms need authoritative information that accurately demonstrates expertise and is supported by consistent signals across their digital presence.
Brown & Crouppen’s CMO Carrie Nielsen said the firm selected PMA Group because its approach extends beyond traditional SEO and addresses the evolution of search.
That strategy also points to a potential change in how marketing agencies will be evaluated. Instead of selling rankings or traffic as the primary outcome, agencies may increasingly need to demonstrate how digital visibility contributes to qualified leads, consultations and revenue.
For enterprise marketing teams, the lesson is broader than the legal sector.
AI search does not necessarily make traditional SEO obsolete. It makes brand authority, content quality, structured information and measurement more important across more discovery channels.
Companies that have historically optimized for one search engine may now need to think about how their information appears wherever customers ask questions.
For Brown & Crouppen, the partnership with PMA Group is an effort to make that transition before AI-driven discovery becomes a more established part of the legal-services buying journey.
The bigger test will be whether increased visibility across traditional and AI-powered search ultimately translates into something that matters more than impressions: qualified clients.
Market Landscape
Search is moving from a ranking-centric model toward a broader AI discovery ecosystem.
Google remains the dominant traditional search environment, but AI Overviews and conversational interfaces are changing how users consume search results. Microsoft is integrating AI into Bing and Copilot, while OpenAI and other AI providers are developing search and research experiences that can answer questions directly.
For marketers, this means SEO is becoming less isolated from content strategy, brand reputation, local search, digital PR and analytics.
Legal services are particularly exposed to this shift because prospective clients frequently research expertise, practice areas, locations and reputation before making contact.
The emerging discipline of AI visibility optimization aims to influence whether a brand is accurately represented and discoverable within these AI-mediated research journeys.
The challenge is measurement. A traditional organic visit can be tracked relatively easily. An AI recommendation that influences a customer but generates no direct click is harder to attribute.
That makes first-party analytics, conversion tracking and broader attribution increasingly important for enterprise marketing teams.
