AI is lowering the barrier between having a digital idea and actually building it. Tencent Cloud’s 2026 “AI CAN DO IT” Game Development Hackathon is putting that shift to the test, with 10 finalist teams from Hong Kong and Macau presenting AI-powered games, cultural experiences and social-impact projects at a regional Demo Day. The competition offers a snapshot of how students, developers and creators are beginning to use AI not simply as a productivity tool, but as part of the creative and development process itself.
Tencent Cloud has brought together 10 finalist teams from Hong Kong and Macau SARs for the regional Demo Day of its 2026 “AI CAN DO IT” Tencent Cloud Game Development Hackathon, highlighting a broader shift underway in digital creation: AI is increasingly becoming part of the production stack for people who previously needed specialized technical teams to turn concepts into working experiences.
The competition attracted more than 10,000 creators across Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau SARs, and Southeast Asia, according to Tencent Cloud. More than 1,000 projects were submitted across the regional competition.
Rather than limiting entries to conventional software development, Tencent Cloud structured the challenge around three themes: Social Good, Cultural Expression and Narrative Innovation. Participants used tools including CodeBuddy, WorkBuddy and Miora to develop games, animations, AI agents and other interactive experiences.
That combination reflects where generative and agentic AI development is heading. Large language models can now assist with code generation, content creation and interaction design, while AI agents can automate parts of a workflow that once required developers to manually connect individual tools and services.
For enterprises and technology teams, the significance is not necessarily the individual projects themselves. It is the development model behind them.
AI-assisted software development is increasingly moving from code completion toward broader orchestration. Developers can use AI to generate software components, troubleshoot code, create documentation and prototype ideas, while creative teams can use generative systems for narrative, visual and interactive content.

The regional finalists also show how AI development is moving beyond generic productivity applications. Projects in the Social Good category explored issues including support for people with high-functioning autism and technologies for ageing populations. Cultural Expression entries incorporated Chinese cultural elements into digital experiences, while Narrative Innovation projects experimented with interactive storytelling and games.
That emphasis is notable because generative AI’s commercial adoption has increasingly focused on productivity. First place went to “Anchor” from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, followed by “Walking in Poetry” from The University of Hong Kong in second place. “LOONG SEASON,” representing the public division, took third place. All three will progress to Tencent Cloud’s Global Finals.
The competition also illustrates the growing importance of cloud platforms in the AI development ecosystem. AI applications increasingly depend on access to model APIs, computing infrastructure, development environments, data services and deployment tools. Tencent Cloud is competing in a market where developers can choose from increasingly broad AI toolchains. Tencent’s advantage is its connection to China’s large consumer internet and gaming ecosystem, as well as its cloud infrastructure and developer tooling. Game development is particularly relevant because it combines several AI capabilities in one environment: procedural content, conversational characters, asset generation, code assistance, personalization and interactive storytelling.
The hackathon’s focus on games therefore points toward a potentially larger market trend. Games can function as testbeds for agentic AI and multimodal systems because they require machines to process language, images, behavior, environments and user interactions in real time.
At the same time, the projects underline an important limitation of AI-assisted creation. Lower technical barriers do not automatically produce better products. Teams still need to define problems, validate outputs, design meaningful user experiences and establish appropriate safeguards around AI-generated content.
That human layer remains central to Tencent Cloud’s message. The company describes the initiative as part of its “Tech for Good” approach, emphasizing responsible use of AI to address social needs, preserve cultural heritage and create practical experiences.
For educators and enterprise innovation teams, that is potentially the more consequential lesson. AI development is becoming accessible to a broader range of creators, but the value increasingly comes from combining AI capabilities with domain knowledge and clear problem definition.
