Telefónica Spain Standardizes on Red Hat OpenShift to Unify IT and 5G Network Workloads

At MWC Barcelona, Red Hat announced a major win in the European telecom market: Telefónica Spain is standardizing on Red Hat OpenShift as its common platform for both IT workloads and cloud-native network functions (CNFs).

It’s more than a platform swap. It’s a structural shift in how one of Europe’s largest operators runs its infrastructure—bringing virtual machines and cloud-native applications onto a single, hybrid cloud foundation.

For an operator balancing legacy systems, 5G expansion, and edge ambitions, simplification is the strategy.

One Platform for IT and Network Operations

Telefónica is consolidating disparate environments onto Red Hat OpenShift, while also integrating Red Hat OpenStack Services on OpenShift to modernize its virtualized infrastructure.

The result: VMs and containerized, cloud-native applications can run side by side on a unified architecture.

That convergence matters. Many telecom operators still operate parallel stacks—one optimized for traditional virtualized network functions (VNFs), another for newer CNFs. Maintaining both adds operational overhead, tooling complexity, and training costs.

By standardizing on OpenShift, Telefónica is aiming to:

  • Streamline lifecycle management
  • Reduce operational silos
  • Centralize updates, logging, and security monitoring
  • Maintain architectural flexibility for 5G and edge scaling

In telecom, where network uptime is non-negotiable, consolidation must come without compromising performance. Telefónica says that’s exactly what it’s achieved.

Deployment Times Slashed From Hours to Minutes

The operational metrics are eye-catching.

According to Red Hat, Telefónica has reduced application deployment times from roughly eight hours to as little as 90 minutes using OpenShift. Capacity scaling, which previously took weeks, can now be executed in seconds.

A significant portion of services supporting residential customer management processes are already running in production on OpenShift.

That kind of acceleration isn’t just about developer convenience. Faster deployment and scaling directly reduce the risk of service degradation during peak demand—an increasingly important factor as 5G services and edge applications add complexity to networks.

Hybrid Cloud, by Design

Telefónica’s OpenShift standardization also preserves workload portability across public cloud environments, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud.

Hybrid cloud flexibility has become essential for large operators. Regulatory constraints, latency requirements, and cost optimization strategies often require shifting workloads between on-premises infrastructure and public cloud providers.

With OpenShift acting as a consistent control plane, Telefónica can move workloads without rewriting applications—at least in theory. In practice, this reduces vendor lock-in and allows for more agile scaling strategies.

Cutting Costs and Complexity

Standardizing on a single platform also brings financial benefits.

Managing one common infrastructure reduces the need for specialized training across multiple technology stacks. It lowers integration overhead and fosters tighter collaboration between IT and network teams—traditionally separate domains within telecom operators.

Telefónica now centralizes updates and security monitoring through OpenShift, reducing operational fragmentation.

For an industry under margin pressure, operational efficiency is often as valuable as revenue growth.

A Broader Industry Trend

Telecom operators worldwide are moving toward cloud-native architectures, but many remain mid-transition. The challenge isn’t simply deploying containers—it’s integrating legacy systems, VNFs, CNFs, and IT applications into a coherent whole.

Telefónica’s approach reflects a growing consensus: Kubernetes-based platforms are becoming the control layer for both enterprise IT and telecom network workloads.

By combining OpenShift with OpenStack Services on OpenShift, Telefónica is effectively bridging the old and the new—maintaining support for VM-based workloads while accelerating cloud-native adoption.

Beyond Digitalization

For Telefónica leadership, the move represents more than modernization.

The company has worked with Red Hat for years, contributing operational requirements into community development and seeing those needs reflected in platform capabilities. That enterprise open-source engagement is central to Telefónica’s long-term strategy.

The goal isn’t incremental digitalization—it’s operational maturity that supports next-generation 5G and edge services across Spain.

In a market where competitive advantage increasingly hinges on service agility and reliability, platform decisions like this shape the next decade of telecom evolution.
