Artificial intelligence has spent much of the past several years becoming better at talking. The next challenge may be getting machines to communicate without words.
Leim Technology is taking that approach to professional tennis with bibo, a non-verbal AI companion that combines multimodal perception, physical interaction and what the company describes as emotional intelligence.
The company announced that bibo has become an official partner of the 2026 Suzhou Open, a WTA125 tournament scheduled for October 5–11 in Suzhou, China. The AI companion will serve as the event’s “player emotional ambassador,” participating in player and fan activities around the tournament.
The partnership is notable less because an AI character is appearing at a sporting event and more because of the type of interaction Leim is attempting to create.
Instead of functioning primarily as a chatbot, bibo is designed to communicate through physical and visual cues, including eye movement, gestures, facial expressions, sounds, pauses and movement.
That puts the product within an emerging category sometimes described as embodied AI companions—AI systems that interact with people through a physical or character-based presence rather than relying solely on a screen.

Leim plans to use bibo’s AI journal and visual-generation capabilities to let players and fans transform tournament photographs into stylized visual content.
A photo taken during a match, player activity or fan experience could become an AI-generated image in a different artistic style.
That makes generative AI part of the event’s content layer rather than simply an attraction.
The approach is consistent with a wider movement in sports toward personalized digital experiences. Sports organizations increasingly use AI to turn live events into individualized content, from automated match analysis to personalized highlights.

What makes the approach interesting from an AI perspective is that the character is also the interface.

The bigger embodied AI opportunity
The Suzhou Open partnership does not demonstrate that emotional AI has solved the difficult problem of machine understanding of human emotion.
That remains a significant technical challenge.
Recognizing facial expressions, gestures or vocal patterns is not the same as understanding what a person actually feels. Nor does expressive behavior necessarily create meaningful companionship.
The commercial experiment is nevertheless worth watching.
AI is increasingly becoming multimodal, with systems capable of processing combinations of text, images, audio and video. The next step is to connect those capabilities to physical environments and more natural forms of interaction.
That is where embodied AI becomes relevant.
For companies such as Leim, the opportunity is to build products that are not simply intelligent but present—systems that can communicate through behavior, occupy physical space and participate in cultural and social experiences.
Sports could be a particularly useful testing ground because sporting events naturally combine competition, emotion, community, entertainment and physical environments.
