Komprise and Spectra Logic have partnered to help enterprises move inactive, data-heavy workloads off expensive primary storage and onto lower-cost disk and tape infrastructure, while keeping the information searchable for AI and analytics. The joint solution combines Komprise’s analytics-driven data classification and transparent tiering with Spectra Logic’s BlackPearl Object Gateway, which provides an Amazon S3-compatible interface to disk and tape storage. The companies say the offering is available now.
Komprise and Spectra Logic Combine Data Intelligence With Tape Storage
The partnership reflects a practical infrastructure challenge facing enterprises: much of the data they retain consumes expensive storage capacity but is rarely accessed. At the same time, organizations want to make years of accumulated files, documents, images and other unstructured information available for AI applications.
Komprise will provide the analytics and policy engine to identify data suitable for archiving, while Spectra Logic’s BlackPearl Object Gateway manages access to its disk and tape storage systems. The integration is designed to move inactive data away from high-performance primary storage without forcing users and applications to change how they access files.
The companies say the joint offering is available immediately through both vendors and their authorized channel partners.
Rising Storage Costs Put Data Tiering Back in Focus
The partnership arrives as enterprise storage costs come under pressure from demand for AI infrastructure and constrained memory supply. IDC reported that worldwide external OEM enterprise storage spending reached $10.3 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 33.7% year over year. The research firm attributed much of the market’s growth to higher prices rather than increased shipped capacity, with external storage prices per gigabyte rising from approximately $0.29 in the first quarter to $0.39 in the second. IDC expects elevated component pricing to persist through at least the second half of 2027. Enterprise Storage Systems Market Insights
The pressure is also visible in enterprise solid-state drive pricing. StorageReview reported in August 2026 that enterprise TLC SSD prices were approximately 6.5 times their third-quarter 2025 levels, based on the VDURA Flash Volatility Index. That makes it increasingly difficult for IT teams to justify keeping rarely accessed information on premium flash infrastructure. StorageReview.com
Tape is regaining attention as one option for long-term retention. The LTO Program Technology Provider Companies—Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and Quantum—reported that shipped tape capacity increased 57% year over year in the first quarter of 2026. The figure followed a 9% decline in total shipped capacity during 2025, indicating that demand can fluctuate even as tape remains a significant archive technology.
For enterprises, the challenge is not simply moving data to cheaper storage. They need to identify which information can be archived, preserve its metadata and access permissions, and retrieve it when business or AI workloads require it.
Komprise Adds Analytics and Policy-Based Tiering
Komprise’s platform analyzes unstructured data across file and object storage environments. Its Flash Stretch assessment examines usage patterns and identifies inactive data that may be suitable for movement to lower-cost storage. The assessment also models potential savings before organizations begin transferring information.
Once data is identified, policy-based tiering can move selected files to Spectra BlackPearl Object Gateway. Organizations can define different policies for departments or datasets, using criteria such as file age, access frequency, ownership and type. Komprise says its platform can automate movement across billions of files.
A central feature is transparent access. Files moved to the archive remain visible from their original locations, allowing users and applications to continue working through familiar paths. Komprise also says it preserves file metadata, permissions and attributes by tiering files as native objects rather than converting them into a proprietary archive format.
This approach is intended to reduce the operational overhead associated with conventional archiving, where users may need to locate archived information separately or wait for large datasets to be restored before they can be used.
BlackPearl Provides an S3-Compatible Route to Tape
Spectra Logic’s BlackPearl Object Gateway provides an Amazon S3-compatible interface to its disk and tape infrastructure. Applications can interact with storage through object-based access without having to manage tape operations directly.
The gateway manages the underlying movement of data to disk and tape, giving organizations a way to use tape for long-term retention while retaining an interface familiar to modern applications. Tape media can also reduce the energy requirements of storing information over long periods because cartridges do not require continuous power while offline.
The combination has a security dimension as well. Spectra Logic identifies encryption, object-lock immutability and air-gapped tape as protection options within supported configurations. Physical separation through offline tape can provide another layer of resilience against ransomware, although it does not replace broader backup, recovery and access-control policies. Komprise+1
Data portability is another part of the proposition. By preserving native object formats and metadata, the joint solution aims to avoid locking archived information into a proprietary storage structure. That could make future migrations and changes to an enterprise’s storage architecture easier to manage.
Keeping Archived Data Useful for AI
The partnership also addresses a growing issue in enterprise AI projects: valuable information is often distributed across storage systems and may not be readily discoverable by AI applications.
Komprise says its Smart Data Workflows and Universal File MCP can help organizations discover, classify and curate relevant datasets for AI and analytics, including information that has already been tiered. The Universal File MCP provides an interface for AI agents and large language models to query unstructured data across storage environments, returning selected information rather than exposing unrestricted file listings. That distinction matters because archiving does not necessarily make information useful to AI. Organizations still need to identify relevant content, apply governance and permissions, and make the right information available to models without indiscriminately moving entire archives into expensive processing environments.
The combined architecture is intended to separate storage economics from data discoverability: information can reside on lower-cost infrastructure while remaining indexed and available for search and curation. Actual retrieval performance will depend on the storage configuration, access patterns and workload requirements.
A Broader Role for Tape in AI Infrastructure
Komprise and Spectra Logic are positioning the integration around a tiered storage strategy rather than a replacement for flash or disk. High-performance storage remains important for active applications and frequently accessed datasets, while tape provides a lower-cost destination for information that must be retained but is accessed less often.
For enterprise IT teams, the appeal will depend on how accurately data policies distinguish active from inactive information, how smoothly archived files can be recalled, and whether the savings justify implementation and operational costs.
The partnership also illustrates how AI is changing the value of enterprise archives. Data that was previously retained mainly for compliance, historical reference or backup may become useful for analytics, retrieval-augmented generation and other AI workflows. Making that information discoverable without keeping every file on premium storage is becoming an important infrastructure consideration.
The joint solution is available now through Komprise, Spectra Logic and their authorized channel partners. Its success will ultimately depend on whether organizations can reduce primary-storage costs while maintaining the access, governance and resilience requirements of their AI and business applications.
Market Landscape
Enterprise storage strategy is increasingly shaped by two competing requirements: controlling the cost of rapidly growing unstructured data and making that information available to AI workloads. Rising flash prices and demand for long-term retention are renewing interest in storage tiering and tape archives. Komprise and Spectra Logic combine data analytics, policy-driven movement and S3-compatible tape access to address this challenge. The broader market opportunity lies in intelligent data placement, where enterprises can match storage performance and cost to how frequently information is used, while retaining discoverability and governance.
