AI coding tools can now generate working applications in minutes, but turning those prototypes into software that regulated companies can actually deploy remains a harder problem. Knack is targeting that gap with a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server that connects AI development tools to a managed relational backend with access controls, audit logging and compliance-oriented features. The company says the service works with tools including Claude, ChatGPT, Lovable, Bolt, Base44 and Replit, allowing builders to connect a production backend without managing infrastructure themselves.
Knack Wants to Solve the Part of AI Coding That Comes After the Prototype
The rise of AI-assisted development has changed the economics of software creation. Tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Replit and Lovable can generate application code, database logic and user interfaces from natural-language instructions.
But generating code is only one part of deploying an application.
Enterprise and regulated environments require controls around who can access data, how records change, where information is stored and how those activities can be audited. Healthcare applications introduce another layer of requirements around protected health information and HIPAA compliance.
Knack’s new MCP Server is aimed at that infrastructure layer.
The Knack MCP Server allows AI coding tools to connect directly to a managed relational database and application backend through the Model Context Protocol. Developers and non-technical builders can configure the connection, authenticate with their Knack credentials and use the backend without building or operating their own server infrastructure.

Compliance Becomes the Next AI Coding Bottleneck
AI-generated applications often look deceptively complete.
A builder can ask an AI system to create a customer database, generate a dashboard and add authentication. What may be missing is the infrastructure and governance required when that application handles sensitive business information.
Knack says its MCP Server addresses this with a scalable relational database, role-based access controls and record change logs. The platform also includes workflows, automations and more than 700 integrations.
Those features put the product closer to a managed application backend than a conventional database API.
For healthcare customers, Knack’s separate Knack Health offering provides a HIPAA-oriented configuration, including a signed Business Associate Agreement and architecture designed for protected health information.
That distinction matters because compliance is not something an AI coding assistant can simply generate into existence. HIPAA compliance, for example, involves administrative, physical and technical safeguards extending beyond application code.
The same principle applies to other regulated industries. An AI assistant can produce an access-control function, but enterprises still need to establish policies, manage identities, monitor activity and demonstrate that controls work consistently.
Knack is therefore positioning its MCP Server as a bridge between AI-generated software and enterprise-grade operational requirements.
MCP Could Change How Developers Assemble Applications
The timing is significant because MCP is increasingly becoming part of the emerging architecture for AI agents.
Instead of an AI model producing text or code in isolation, an MCP-connected agent can interact with external systems. It can query information, invoke tools and potentially perform actions within defined permissions.
That creates a different software-development model.

The differentiator for Knack is its attempt to make these capabilities directly consumable by AI coding tools while emphasizing compliance and business applications.
The Enterprise Test Is Still Ahead
The central question is whether AI-generated applications can move from rapid prototyping into systems that businesses trust with consequential data.
That is a much bigger test than whether an MCP server can establish a database connection.
Enterprise buyers will likely evaluate security architecture, identity management, auditability, data residency, integration capabilities, support and compliance documentation alongside developer experience. They will also need clear policies governing what AI agents can do automatically.
The market is moving in that direction. Gartner has predicted that by 2028, 33% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI, up from less than 1% in 2024.
As AI agents become part of business software, access to reliable backend infrastructure becomes increasingly important.
Knack’s proposition is that the backend should not become the bottleneck.
