Elisa Taps Google Cloud to Build AI-First Autonomous Telco Network
Finnish telecom giant Elisa Oyj is doubling down on automation and AI. In a bold move to redefine telecom operations, the company announced an expanded partnership with Google Cloud aimed at transforming its network into a fully autonomous, agent-driven infrastructure.
The initiative builds on Elisa’s Elisa Defined Network (EDN) and integrates Google Cloud’s Autonomous Network Operations framework, blending cutting-edge tools like BigQuery, Spanner, Vertex AI, and Gemini models to develop intelligent, multi-agent systems for network management.
“We’re not just automating—we’re building a network that thinks and acts for itself,” said Sami Komulainen, Chief Operating Officer at Elisa. “This partnership will allow us to deliver world-leading efficiency and customer service at scale.”
The Rise of the Agentic Telco
As 5G, edge computing, and data demand surge, telcos are straining under growing complexity. Elisa’s move positions it at the forefront of a new paradigm: the agentic telco—a system of autonomous, intelligent agents capable of managing, healing, and optimizing telecom operations with minimal human intervention.
With Google Cloud’s Agent Development Kit (ADK) and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol, Elisa is creating customized AI agents capable of:
- Zero-touch operations – Routine tasks are fully automated.
- Smart goal execution – Networks align themselves with business objectives in real time.
- Self-healing – Proactive detection and resolution of service disruptions.
- Prescriptive analytics – AI-driven foresight to address problems before they impact users.
- Operational efficiency – Significant reductions in manual oversight and OPEX.
- Accelerated innovation – Faster rollout of services like 5G and edge applications.
Transforming Customer Experience with AI
Elisa’s autonomous network push isn’t just a technical upgrade—it’s a strategic shift to deliver more resilient, scalable, and responsive services.
“By leveraging Google Cloud’s AI stack, Elisa is building a truly intelligent network,” said Muninder Singh Sambi, VP and GM of Networking and Security at Google Cloud. “This will bring faster innovation, smarter service delivery, and ultimately a better digital experience to customers.”
Elisa’s use of Google’s Vertex AI and Gemini models will enable continuous learning, diagnostics, and decision-making across critical workflows—from mobile network optimization to customer service reliability.
The Bigger Picture: AI-Powered Sustainability
Elisa’s vision extends beyond performance. The company’s mission—“A sustainable future through digitalisation”—drives its pursuit of smarter, more energy-efficient operations. An autonomous network reduces waste, optimizes resources, and minimizes the need for human oversight—making it not just faster, but greener.
“This isn’t just about telecom—it’s about creating the operating system for the digital economy of tomorrow,” said Komulainen.
