Cloud management software has long had a paradox at its center: enterprises need sophisticated control because their infrastructure is fragmented, but the platforms designed to provide that control can themselves be difficult and expensive to evaluate. CloudBolt Software is taking aim at both problems with a new free edition of CloudBolt CMP, giving teams access to the full platform for up to 100 managed resources while introducing a redesigned interface and natural-language infrastructure controls.
Cloud infrastructure is becoming more distributed, not less. Enterprises are running workloads across public clouds, private infrastructure, Kubernetes clusters and virtualization platforms, while AI is adding another layer of infrastructure demand. Managing that environment increasingly requires a control plane that can span systems rather than another tool tied to a single cloud.
CloudBolt Software is betting that teams will be more willing to try such a platform if they can do so without first securing a software budget or sitting through a sales process.
The company has launched a no-cost edition of CloudBolt CMP, its cloud management platform, that provides the same core platform capabilities available in the commercial product for up to 100 managed resources. The limit applies to resources such as virtual machines, storage, clusters, databases and networks rather than to individual features.
CloudBolt has paired the pricing change with a substantial redesign of the CMP interface and a natural-language interface based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The combination is intended to make hybrid cloud management accessible to teams that may not have the time or specialist knowledge required to learn a complex infrastructure-management platform.
From cloud console sprawl to a common control plane
The underlying problem CloudBolt is addressing is familiar to infrastructure teams. AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud each provide their own management interfaces, APIs, permissions models and automation capabilities. Private infrastructure and Kubernetes introduce another set of operational surfaces.
A cloud management platform sits above those environments, providing a common layer for provisioning, governance, automation and visibility.
CloudBolt CMP is designed to operate across public and private clouds, VMware and Kubernetes environments, among others. Its platform combines self-service provisioning, role-based governance, lifecycle orchestration, cost visibility and automation in a single control plane.
That approach is becoming more relevant as hybrid infrastructure expands. Gartner has forecast that 90% of organizations will adopt a hybrid cloud approach through 2027, while also identifying data synchronization across hybrid environments as a major challenge for generative AI deployments.
The implication for enterprise IT is straightforward: managing infrastructure increasingly means managing the relationships between environments, not simply optimizing an individual cloud.
AI enters the infrastructure control layer
The more interesting part of CloudBolt’s announcement is the integration of natural-language interaction through MCP.
Rather than requiring an engineer to navigate a sequence of menus or construct API calls, an MCP-compatible AI assistant can interact with CloudBolt CMP using conversational requests. CloudBolt says teams can use the approach to query infrastructure, initiate workflows and perform supported resource operations.

The important distinction is governance.
An AI assistant that can create or modify infrastructure introduces obvious questions around permissions, approvals and accountability. CloudBolt says its MCP implementation operates through the platform’s existing permissions and governance model rather than creating a separate authorization layer.
For enterprises, that matters more than the novelty of typing a request into a chatbot. The useful question is whether AI can accelerate infrastructure work without creating an unmanaged path around established controls.
A free product changes the evaluation equation
CloudBolt’s 100-resource limit is also strategically significant.
Cloud management platforms compete in a market that includes HPE Morpheus, Flexera, IBM Cloudability and Turbonomic, VMware/Broadcom infrastructure-management products, and cloud-native management tools from the major hyperscalers. Gartner Peer Insights lists several of these products among alternatives considered by CloudBolt customers.
Those products do not all solve exactly the same problem. Some emphasize cost management, some infrastructure automation, some virtualization or Kubernetes management, and others are tightly integrated with a particular cloud ecosystem.
CloudBolt’s positioning is broader: a vendor-neutral orchestration and governance layer spanning multiple environments.
The free edition gives prospective customers a way to test that proposition against their own infrastructure rather than relying primarily on demonstrations or proof-of-concept discussions.
That aligns with a wider change in enterprise software buying. Gartner reported in 2026 that 67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free buying experience, while 45% said they had used AI during a recent purchase.
For infrastructure software, self-service evaluation can be particularly valuable because the technology is highly environment-dependent. A platform that works well in a vendor’s demonstration environment may behave differently once it encounters an organization’s existing identity systems, networking architecture, virtualization layer, automation scripts and compliance requirements.
What enterprises should evaluate
The free tier should not automatically be interpreted as a reason to replace existing infrastructure-management tools.
For cloud and platform engineering teams, the more useful test is whether CloudBolt can reduce operational fragmentation without adding another abstraction layer that engineers have to maintain.
A practical evaluation would involve several workflows: provisioning a resource through a governed catalog, applying policies across more than one environment, automating a day-two operation, measuring cost visibility, and testing an MCP-connected AI assistant against real permissions and approval requirements.
The 100-resource ceiling is enough for many proof-of-concept environments, development teams and departmental deployments, but large enterprises will eventually need to evaluate the economics and operational value of the commercial tier.
That makes the announcement less about giving away cloud management software and more about changing how infrastructure-management platforms are introduced.
As AI infrastructure spending moves rapidly from experimentation toward scale, the control layer beneath those workloads becomes increasingly important. IDC says worldwide AI infrastructure spending reached $89.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, up 62% year over year, with full-year spending reaching $318 billion.
CloudBolt’s move arrives against that backdrop. Enterprises are being asked to manage more infrastructure, across more locations, with fewer manual processes. Making a complex control plane easier to test, easier to operate and accessible through AI could become a meaningful competitive advantage—but only if the underlying governance and automation prove as capable as the interface suggests.
For enterprise infrastructure teams, the most consequential part of CloudBolt’s announcement may therefore not be the $0 price tag. It is the attempt to make hybrid cloud management behave more like an accessible software interface while retaining the controls expected of enterprise infrastructure.
