Apple is turning its entry-level AirPods into a more capable AI interface with AirPods 5, adding active noise cancellation, computational audio, Siri AI and Live Translation to an open-ear design starting at $129. The launch comes as the hearables market increasingly moves beyond audio playback toward AI assistants, real-time translation and context-aware interactions.
Apple has introduced AirPods 5, a new generation of open-ear wireless earbuds that combines active noise cancellation (ANC), redesigned acoustics and hands-free artificial intelligence features at a lower price point than Apple’s Pro models.
The new AirPods start at $129, while AirPods 5 with a Wireless Charging Case cost $149. Preorders begin September 9, with retail availability scheduled for September 18. Apple says the new earbuds deliver its strongest ANC performance yet in an open-ear AirPods design, with up to 50% more external noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC.
The bigger technology story, however, is the way Apple is positioning the earbuds as an AI endpoint rather than simply an audio accessory.
Open-Ear Audio Meets Computational AI
AirPods 5 use a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ to adjust the listening experience across different ear geometries. Apple has also redesigned Transparency mode to make surrounding voices and sounds feel more natural.
Adaptive Audio can dynamically combine ANC and Transparency mode depending on environmental conditions, while Conversation Awareness automatically lowers media volume when the wearer begins speaking.
These capabilities depend heavily on computational audio — a category increasingly becoming a defining feature of modern wireless earbuds.
Apple’s claim of up to 50% greater noise reduction is based on its own testing against AirPods 4 with ANC, rather than an independent industry benchmark. That distinction matters as ANC performance becomes increasingly difficult to compare across manufacturers because testing methods, environments and fit can materially affect results.
The underlying market is nevertheless moving in Apple’s direction.
IDC reported that global hearables shipments reached 95.2 million units in the first quarter of 2026, with open-ear products accounting for 10.67 million units and growing 39.9% year over year. IDC also expects global hearable shipments to reach 407.6 million units in 2026, with AI assistants and real-time translation among the technologies supporting category growth.
AI Turns Earbuds Into an Interface
AirPods 5’s most consequential features may not be acoustic at all.
When paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, users can access Siri AI hands-free. Apple describes the new Siri as capable of using personal context across information such as messages, emails and photos while also answering questions using broader world knowledge.
That changes the role of earbuds. Instead of simply delivering information from a phone, they become an always-available interface for interacting with an AI assistant.
Users can also respond to Siri through head gestures. A nod can confirm a response, while a head shake can reject one, allowing interaction without reaching for an iPhone.
This is part of a broader trend toward ambient AI, where interaction moves away from screens and toward voice, sensors and wearable devices.
IDC’s research on open-ear headphones points to the same direction. The research firm says AI is becoming an important area of differentiation as manufacturers seek to move beyond increasingly similar hardware specifications.
Live Translation Expands the Use Case
Apple is also bringing Live Translation to AirPods.
After setting up the feature through Apple’s Translate app and downloading supported languages, users can initiate translation through the earbuds by pressing both stems, using Siri or the Action button on an iPhone. The translated conversation is then delivered through the AirPods.
The feature combines Apple’s AI capabilities with ANC and computational audio, turning earbuds into a real-time language interface.
Translation is becoming an increasingly common AI feature in wireless audio. Counterpoint Research reported that one in three TWS devices in India’s market had AI noise-cancellation capabilities in the first quarter of 2026, while AI translation and transparency features were gaining traction in premium products.
For Apple, the differentiator is less about introducing AI translation as an isolated feature and more about integrating it into the company’s existing hardware, operating systems and AI ecosystem.
A More Capable Entry-Level AirPods
AirPods 5 also address several conventional hardware limitations.
The standard model includes ANC, while the Wireless Charging Case version adds stem-based volume control. The latter supports up to five hours of playback with ANC enabled on a single charge and up to 22 hours with the charging case, according to Apple.
The earbuds also receive improved dust, sweat and water resistance, with Apple’s specifications listing an IP57 rating.
The $129 starting price is strategically important. Apple is effectively bringing capabilities previously associated with more expensive wireless earbuds — including ANC, spatial audio, AI interaction and translation — into its lower-priced AirPods tier.
In India, Apple lists AirPods 5 at ₹14,900, while AirPods 5 with the Wireless Charging Case are priced at ₹17,900.
The Emerging AI Hearables Market
The competitive landscape is becoming more complicated than a traditional AirPods-versus-earbuds comparison.
Open-ear designs are growing rapidly, particularly as consumers seek devices that can remain comfortable for extended periods while maintaining awareness of their surroundings. IDC reported 39.9% year-over-year growth in open-ear headphone shipments during the first quarter of 2026, with ear-clip designs becoming the largest open-ear form factor.
At the same time, AI is pushing earbuds toward functions previously associated with smartphones: translation, voice assistance, environmental interpretation and increasingly personalized interactions.
That creates a new competitive frontier involving AI platforms, edge computing, speech recognition, computational audio and wearable interfaces. Apple has an advantage in connecting those pieces through iPhone, iOS, Apple Intelligence and its broader device ecosystem.
But competitors are pursuing similar ideas through Android, proprietary AI assistants and increasingly specialized open-ear hardware.
The key question is therefore no longer simply whether earbuds sound better. It is whether they can become useful, low-friction interfaces for AI without creating new problems around privacy, latency, battery life and dependence on a smartphone.
AirPods 5 are an important step in that direction. At $129, Apple is making the company’s AI-enabled hearables strategy available to a much broader segment of its installed base — potentially turning millions of earbuds into everyday gateways to generative AI and real-time assistance.
Market Landscape
- Hearables remain a major wearable category: IDC forecasts 407.6 million hearable shipments globally in 2026, with AI assistants, translation and health monitoring contributing to demand.
- Open-ear is growing faster than the broader category: IDC recorded 39.9% year-over-year growth in open-ear headphone shipments in Q1 2026.
- AI is becoming a mainstream earbud feature: Counterpoint found that roughly one-third of India’s TWS devices had AI noise cancellation in Q1 2026.
- The competitive battleground is shifting: AI assistants, translation, adaptive audio and contextual computing increasingly differentiate earbuds alongside traditional sound-quality specifications.
