MariaDB plc today announced the acquisition of SkySQL Inc., the independent company behind an AI-powered, serverless database-as-a-service (DBaaS) platform. The deal brings SkySQL’s technology—originally developed by MariaDB before being spun out in 2023—back into the company’s portfolio.
The move strengthens MariaDB Cloud, which now integrates SkySQL’s DBaaS capabilities to give enterprises broader deployment flexibility, whether self-managed, fully managed, or serverless across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
“Our customers have made it clear they want flexibility, and they need powerful, reliable database solutions wherever their business takes them,” said Rohit de Souza, CEO of MariaDB plc. “Acquiring SkySQL helps accelerate our roadmap and adds further innovation to MariaDB Cloud. It’s a decisive step to deliver a comprehensive, modern, world-class database platform our customers need to stay competitive.”
Why This Matters
Cloud adoption is accelerating. According to a June 2025 IDC market forecast, enterprises are shifting workloads to cloud-based databases for scalability, cost efficiency, and accessibility—especially as distributed teams demand more agile infrastructure.
MariaDB Cloud, now reinforced with SkySQL, offers:
- Provisioned and serverless DBaaS across all major hyperscalers.
- Agentic AI capabilities to transform developer interactions with complex data.
- Access to MariaDB Enterprise Platform as a fully managed cloud service, delivering enterprise-grade performance, security, clustering, and high availability.
SkySQL’s AI and Serverless Edge
“SkySQL’s sophistication—from its elasticity and advanced serverless technology to its built-in agentic AI—is extremely impressive,” said Vikas Mathur, CPO of MariaDB plc. “Bringing this back into the MariaDB portfolio allows us to address customer demand immediately and positions MariaDB as the default platform for building GenAI applications.”
SkySQL’s entire team will integrate into MariaDB, adding depth to its product, engineering, support, and go-to-market operations.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we built with SkySQL in a short time—a DBaaS that scales effortlessly and supports reliable, AI-driven applications,” said Jags Ramnarayan, CTO of SkySQL. “This acquisition is a win for customers, who will benefit from faster innovation cycles and broader global reach.”
MariaDB’s Momentum
The SkySQL acquisition follows two other major milestones this year:
- The acquisition of Galera Cluster for high availability (June 2025).
- The launch of an upgraded MariaDB Enterprise Platform (January 2025), including open source vector search for AI applications.
The flagship MariaDB Enterprise Platform has also been recognized as Best Overall Database in the 2025 DBTA Readers’ Choice Awards and Best in Open Source AI at the 2025 AI TechAwards.
These moves come less than a year after MariaDB’s take-private transaction by K1 Investment Management and the appointment of de Souza as CEO in September 2024.
