Clarivate, a global leader in transformative intelligence, has announced a major expansion of its Academic AI Platform, introducing AI Agents and a forthcoming Agent Builder toolset. Starting April 2025, these innovations will empower institutions to accelerate productivity, improve academic workflows, and integrate intelligent agents into the digital environments that researchers, students, and administrators already use. This expansion positions Clarivate at the forefront of agentic AI—a leap beyond generative AI—offering academic institutions the ability to automate and orchestrate complex, multi-step processes through collaborative, intelligent agents.
From Generative AI to Agentic Intelligence
While generative AI has proven effective for producing content and answering queries, AI Agents represent the next evolutionary step. These agents reason, plan, and act to achieve specific academic goals—guiding workflows, surfacing insights, and executing actions across connected systems.
Clarivate’s AI Agents are purpose-built for academia, extending the company’s leadership in research tools, analytics, and metadata services. These agents will tap into curated Clarivate data, empowering librarians, faculty, research leaders, and students to perform high-value tasks more efficiently while preserving the values of academic integrity and human oversight
Launching in 2025: AI Agents for Core Academic Use Cases
Clarivate is initially releasing a portfolio of pre-built AI Agents, designed to tackle high-impact academic workflows:
1. Literature Review Agent
Launching April 10, 2025 via the Web of Science Research Assistant, this agent will guide researchers through the labor-intensive literature review process—optimizing search queries, analyzing results, and summarizing findings to highlight key themes, gaps, and trending topics.
2. Research Intelligence Agent
Available by August 2025 to development partners and early adopters, this agent will support institutional research planning. It will offer insights into institutional research performance, suggest potential collaborations, and identify aligned funding opportunities—all within the Web of Science Research Intelligence platform.
Agent Builder: Democratizing Academic AI Development
To support custom innovation, Clarivate will introduce an Agent Builder—a low-code/no-code platform that allows institutions to design, deploy, and integrate their own AI agents. Built with accessibility in mind, the Agent Builder will feature:
- Prompt builder & orchestration tools
- System connectors to institutional portals, learning platforms, and local data sources
- Integration with Clarivate data and tools
- Conversational interface for intuitive development
By eliminating the need for deep technical expertise, the Agent Builder will enable academic institutions to innovate quickly, scale efficiently, and align AI tools with local needs.
Enabling a Collaborative AI Community
In the spirit of academic collaboration, Clarivate is also fostering a community-driven AI ecosystem. Institutions will be able to share templates, tools, and workflows, accelerating adoption while ensuring solutions are co-developed and guided by shared academic priorities.
This approach echoes Clarivate’s prior community-driven initiatives like Cloud Apps and the Developer Network, extending those collaborative foundations into the realm of AI.
“With the expansion of the Clarivate Academic AI Platform, we’re introducing AI Agents and the Agent Builder to foster a collaborative ecosystem where institutions can develop, refine, and share AI-powered solutions built on curated content,” said Oren Beit-Arie, SVP of Strategy & Innovation at Clarivate.
Looking Ahead: Responsible, Transparent AI for Academia
Clarivate continues to emphasize ethical AI development, guided by its AI Principles that prioritize transparency, integrity, and human oversight. This commitment ensures the Academic AI Platform remains aligned with the values of research institutions while embracing technological advancement.
The platform’s next phase will center on further developing community-built tools, expanding agentic AI capabilities, and scaling the Agent Builder program, with the full Development Partner Program set to roll out later in 2025.
With its latest advancements, Clarivate is shaping the future of AI in academia—not just by offering tools, but by empowering institutions to co-create intelligent, impactful solutions. By introducing agentic AI into academic workflows, the company is helping higher education institutions achieve new levels of efficiency, collaboration, and innovation.
As Clarivate continues to expand its AI portfolio, universities and research organizations are poised to benefit from a platform that is as strategic as it is scalable, and as collaborative as it is cutting-edge.
