Deakin Launches Applied AI Master's at GIFT City Deakin Launches Applied AI Master's at GIFT City

Deakin University is expanding its AI education offering in India with a new Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence (Professional) at its GIFT City campus. The 18-month postgraduate programme will begin with the July 2027 intake and combines advanced AI coursework with applied projects, professional learning and research pathways.

Deakin University is adding a dedicated postgraduate programme in artificial intelligence at its GIFT City campus in India, as universities and technology employers respond to growing demand for advanced AI engineering and applied computing skills.

The Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence (Professional) is scheduled to begin in July 2027, with applications open for the inaugural intake. Deakin’s official course information lists the GIFT City programme as an 18-month continuous course comprising 16 credit points and recognises the resulting qualification at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 9.

The programme extends Deakin’s existing Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence into its India campus. The curriculum is designed around both foundational AI concepts and applied technical disciplines, with core subjects covering machine learning, mathematics for AI, AI engineering and human-aligned artificial intelligence.

Students then move into more specialised areas including deep learning, natural language processing, robotics, computer vision, speech processing and reinforcement learning. Some of the listed units, including Natural Language Processing and Reinforcement Learning, are scheduled to become available at the GIFT City campus from 2028, according to Deakin’s 2027 handbook.

The structure reflects how AI roles are expanding beyond model development. Modern AI teams increasingly require people who can engineer AI systems, integrate models into software, evaluate their behaviour and apply them to business and operational problems.

Deakin’s professional programme also includes options for applied industry learning or research. Students can pursue a professional studies research-project pathway, while elective options include areas such as cybersecurity, data science and machine learning in business.

The programme is professionally accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS), according to Deakin. The university says the qualification is also recognised internationally for entry to professional practice by other accrediting bodies through the Seoul Accord, subject to completion requirements.

The GIFT City location gives the programme a different role from Deakin’s established Australian and online offerings. Deakin currently describes GIFT City as its India campus and says its postgraduate portfolio there is focused on areas including artificial intelligence, business analytics and cybersecurity.

The AI programme is also being positioned to accommodate applicants from more than one academic pathway. Deakin’s admissions framework considers applicants with relevant bachelor’s degrees as well as certain candidates whose previous academic background is outside IT or computing but who have relevant professional experience, subject to the university’s requirements.

That broader entry model reflects the increasingly cross-functional nature of enterprise AI. AI projects now span software engineering, data science, product management, cybersecurity, business operations and domain-specific applications. As a result, demand for AI skills is no longer limited to traditional machine-learning research roles.

Deakin’s programme is structured around this applied orientation. Its stated course outcomes include designing, implementing, operating and evaluating AI solutions for complex real-world problems, alongside professional, ethical and collaborative capabilities.

The university’s curriculum also includes human-aligned AI, an area that is becoming more relevant as organisations move from experimental generative AI deployments toward systems that interact with employees, customers and operational processes.

For the broader AI education market, the programme illustrates a shift from general computer science training toward specialised postgraduate programmes covering the complete AI development lifecycle. Machine learning remains a core discipline, but students are also being trained in computer vision, language technologies, reinforcement learning, robotics and AI engineering.

This is particularly relevant in India, where AI adoption is spreading across software, financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, retail and other sectors. Employers need skills not only to develop models but also to deploy, integrate and govern AI systems within existing technology environments.

Deakin is also connecting the new programme with its wider GIFT City portfolio. The campus currently offers postgraduate programmes in business analytics and cybersecurity alongside the AI degree, creating an academic mix around data, technology, security and digital transformation.

The university says the initial intake for the AI programme will be limited, with the intention of supporting academic engagement, industry connections and personalised learning. The GIFT City course is specifically offered to students commencing there in 2027 and is separate from Deakin’s Australian-campus and online versions of its Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence (Professional).

The programme also gives students a pathway into a range of AI-related roles. Deakin identifies potential career directions including machine-learning engineering, AI architecture, AI product management, AI software engineering and related specialist positions.

For India’s AI ecosystem, the significance of programmes such as this extends beyond the number of graduates produced. The technology industry increasingly needs professionals who understand both AI models and the engineering infrastructure required to put them into production.

That includes model development, data pipelines, software integration, evaluation, responsible AI practices and the deployment of AI applications at scale. A postgraduate programme spanning these areas can therefore sit at the intersection of AI Development Frameworks, Machine Learning Infrastructure and Enterprise AI Applications.

Deakin’s GIFT City launch is ultimately part of a broader transition in AI education: from teaching AI as a specialist research discipline toward preparing professionals to build and operate AI systems across industries.

Market Landscape

AI education is increasingly moving toward applied programmes that combine machine learning fundamentals with engineering, deployment and industry experience. Deakin’s GIFT City curriculum reflects that model by combining machine learning, deep learning, NLP, computer vision, robotics, reinforcement learning and AI engineering.

The programme also incorporates human-aligned AI and professional or research project pathways, reflecting the growing need for AI practitioners who can work across technical and organisational environments.

Within India’s technology ecosystem, this creates a talent-development layer around AI Platforms, Generative AI Technologies, Machine Learning Infrastructure and Enterprise AI Applications. Universities are increasingly adapting postgraduate education around the skills needed to move AI projects from experimentation into production.
