ZeroEyes, the creators of the first AI-based gun detection video analytics platform to earn full U.S. Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act Designation, announced an expansion of its deployment at Ki Charter’s San Marcos campus. Following initial success, the school will now use ZeroEyes’ platform to enhance real-time situational awareness and proactive threat detection.
Ki Charter serves over 6,500 students annually in residential facilities and day centers across Texas, including the 65-acre San Marcos Treatment Center, the state’s largest residential treatment facility. The San Marcos campus houses around 200 residents and employs 425 staff members, including educators and treatment center personnel.
“ZeroEyes added a level of real-time awareness we simply didn’t have before,” said Dr. Jerry Lager, Superintendent of Ki Charter. “After seeing how effective the technology was, expanding its use was an easy decision.”
How ZeroEyes Works
ZeroEyes’ AI gun detection software integrates with existing digital security cameras. When a firearm is detected, images are instantly relayed to the ZeroEyes Operations Center (ZOC), the industry’s only U.S.-based, fully in-house operations center staffed 24/7/365 by military and law enforcement veterans. Verified threats trigger immediate alerts to local law enforcement and campus security teams, delivering actionable intelligence — including gun type, location, and visual description — in as little as 3 to 5 seconds.
“Ki Charter has built a thoughtful, multi-layered safety program, and we’re proud to continue to play a role in strengthening it,” said Mike Lahiff, CEO and cofounder of ZeroEyes. “Their leadership understands that proactive security is essential on a campus of this size and complexity.”
Implications for School Security
The expansion underscores a growing trend in K–12 security: integrating AI-based surveillance with human-verified responses. As schools nationwide grapple with the challenge of safeguarding high-mobility, residential student populations, platforms like ZeroEyes offer both speed and accuracy, reducing the reliance on purely reactive measures.
By combining AI detection with experienced operators, Ki Charter’s adoption reflects a broader shift toward proactive, intelligent campus security—particularly in high-risk, large-scale educational environments.
