The Canal & River Trust (C&RT) manages 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, but now it’s setting a new course on the road—by fitting over 500 of its fleet vehicles with Teletrac Navman AI-enabled Smart Dashcams.
The charity, responsible for maintaining canals, rivers, and locks, is rolling out the technology to sharpen driver safety, improve training, and blunt the impact of rising insurance costs.
Dual Views, Real-Time Coaching
Teletrac Navman’s Smart Dashcams capture both forward- and driver-facing perspectives, fusing live video with telematics data to give fleet managers a unified, always-on view of driving behavior and road conditions.
When the AI detects risky maneuvers—whether it’s harsh braking, speeding, or repeated unsafe patterns—it triggers in-cab alerts in real time. Fleet managers can also use recorded footage for targeted coaching later, turning every incident into a teachable moment and even rewarding consistently safe driving.
“Modern fleets are expected to build a culture of safety,” said Barney Goffer, UK Product Manager at Teletrac Navman. “Combining AI with Smart Dashcams gives C&RT increased visibility and efficiency while reinforcing driver wellbeing.”
Data-Driven Training That Hits Home
For C&RT’s workforce—multi-skilled operatives and tradespeople—the dashcams aren’t just a monitoring tool; they’re a feedback engine. “The cameras allow us to replay their own driving to them—whether good or bad,” said Steve Mulvaney, C&RT Fleet Manager. “There’s nothing like seeing your own driving replayed to help recognise the potential risks.”
The Trust reports a positive response from its drivers, who see the tech as a way to protect themselves and others on the road while building on their own skills.
Fleet Safety in an AI Era
As insurance premiums climb and fleets face heightened scrutiny over safety records, AI-driven video telematics is becoming a critical tool for risk management. For C&RT, the deployment not only reinforces its safety culture but also positions it ahead of the curve in connected fleet technology—where prevention, not just post-incident analysis, is the endgame.
