The Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC) Foundation, the open source network operating system (NOS) project hosted under the Linux Foundation, announced today that seven new organizations have joined its ranks. The announcement coincides with the kickoff of Open Source Summit Europe 2025 in Amsterdam, where SONiC will showcase its latest community contributions and industry momentum.
New Members Strengthen Ecosystem Reach
The latest additions to SONiC include six General Members—Aureka, iA cloud, Juniper Networks, Larch Networks, PANTHEON.tech, and Sumitomo Electric Industries—and one new Associate Member, the University of Rome Tor Vergata. With these new participants, SONiC now counts 36 global members, spanning networking vendors, cloud providers, AI infrastructure players, and research institutions.
“We’re thrilled to welcome our new members to the SONiC community,” said Arpit Joshipura, senior vice president and general manager of Networking, Edge, and IoT at the Linux Foundation. “The diversity of backgrounds and technical leadership are key to accelerating open, disaggregated networking at scale. With even stronger community momentum and active participation at Open Source Summit Europe, SONiC continues to lead as the platform of choice for next-generation cloud and data center networking.”
Why SONiC Matters
SONiC, originally developed by Microsoft and contributed to the open source community, has rapidly grown into a de facto standard for open networking in cloud and hyperscale data centers. Its modular, container-based architecture allows operators to disaggregate software from hardware, enabling flexibility, scalability, and cost efficiency.
The project has been widely adopted by hyperscalers, telecoms, and enterprises looking to modernize networking infrastructure without relying on proprietary solutions. Recent growth in AI and high-performance workloads has further increased interest in SONiC’s ability to deliver scalable, programmable, and vendor-neutral networking.
Community Engagement at OSS Europe
At this year’s Open Source Summit Europe (August 25–27, Amsterdam), SONiC will feature:
- Technical deep dives into the latest SONiC releases and roadmap.
- Collaborative sessions on AI infrastructure, edge networking, and cloud integration.
- Cross-community panels with Linux Foundation projects on interoperability and open standards.
With the addition of new members and expanded community programming, SONiC is positioning itself as a cornerstone of the open networking movement, driving adoption across both cloud-native and traditional enterprise environments.
Bottom Line
As the global networking industry braces for an AI-driven data explosion, the SONiC Foundation is building critical momentum. Backed by 36 members across industry and academia, SONiC is not only solidifying its role as the leading open NOS but also ensuring that the future of networking remains open, disaggregated, and collaborative.
