Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) announced that its subsidiary, Planet Labs Federal, has secured a $12.8 million contract from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) under the Luno B IDIQ contract. The award covers Advanced Analytics for Maritime Operations and Reconnaissance (AAMOR), providing AI-enabled Maritime Domain Awareness solutions over strategic areas in the Asia-Pacific region.
AI-Powered Maritime Monitoring
Under the contract, Planet Labs Federal and partner SynMax will deliver AI-driven vessel detection and monitoring by combining PlanetScope’s daily global satellite imagery with SynMax’s Theia product analytics. The solution provides real-time insights into illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, illicit ship-to-ship transfers, and vessel spoofing.
“Planet is proud to deepen our partnership with the NGA as the prime provider for AAMOR under Luno B,” said Jon Powers, VP of Global Defense and Intelligence at Planet. “Leveraging our PlanetScope constellation’s broad-area coverage and near-daily revisit rates, users receive critical, actionable data to maintain maritime security worldwide.”
The Strategic Role of Luno B
Luno B was created to give the national security community timely access to high-quality commercial geospatial intelligence (GEOINT). By combining data and analytics, the platform enhances situational awareness of global economic, environmental, and geopolitical activities, including illicit maritime operations. The NGA can exercise multiple pre-priced options to expand or extend the AAMOR award under the Luno B IDIQ framework.
Supporting Federal Agencies with Timely Intelligence
Planet Labs Federal aims to equip U.S. federal civilian agencies, the Department of Defense, and the Intelligence Community with actionable satellite data and analytics. The contract reinforces Planet’s role in providing near-real-time intelligence for monitoring global maritime activity and responding to strategic and tactical challenges.
With the integration of AI and daily satellite imagery, the partnership sets a new standard for automated maritime monitoring, giving defense and intelligence organizations faster, more precise insights than ever before.
