PayPal is bringing frictionless payments directly into ChatGPT, marking a major leap in how users buy and sell online. The company today announced it will adopt OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)—a move that embeds PayPal’s payment network into ChatGPT and enables instant checkout experiences within conversations.
ChatGPT as a Shopping Channel
With this integration, millions of ChatGPT users can now check out with PayPal in just a few taps—no redirects, no extra steps. It’s part of a broader partnership that also lets PayPal handle payments for merchants using OpenAI Instant Checkout, a feature that turns product discovery inside ChatGPT into real-time purchases.
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said Alex Chriss, PayPal’s CEO. “By partnering with OpenAI and adopting ACP, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps.”
A New Layer of Commerce Infrastructure
Under the hood, the Agentic Commerce Protocol is OpenAI’s framework for enabling AI-driven shopping and transactions inside chat interfaces. For PayPal, this means connecting its global merchant network—from small sellers to global retail brands—directly to ChatGPT.
By 2026, PayPal plans to make millions of product listings discoverable inside ChatGPT, spanning categories like fashion, electronics, and home improvement. Merchants won’t need individual integrations; PayPal’s ACP server will handle product routing, payment validation, and order orchestration seamlessly.
What Users and Merchants Get
For users, the integration means full access to PayPal’s wallet—including balance, bank, and card options—plus buyer and seller protections, tracking, and dispute resolution.
For merchants, it means instant exposure to ChatGPT’s massive audience without the technical overhead of building an AI commerce integration.
Expanding the AI Alliance
Beyond commerce, PayPal is also expanding its use of OpenAI’s technology internally. The company is rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex across its 24,000+ employees, aiming to boost productivity and accelerate product development.
It’s a strategic play that signals PayPal’s intent to stay at the forefront of AI transformation—both in how it powers commerce and how it builds it.
The Bigger Picture
This partnership underscores a growing trend: AI chat interfaces are fast becoming new commerce frontiers. With Amazon exploring conversational shopping and Stripe deepening its AI integrations, PayPal’s move places it squarely in the next generation of digital payments—where search, conversation, and checkout converge in one place.
For merchants and consumers alike, ChatGPT may soon feel less like a chatbot and more like a shopping mall.
