Michelin’s Road to the Future Is Paved With Data
For Michelin, the future of mobility is no longer just about tires—it’s about intelligence. The global tire giant is reinventing itself as a data-driven, AI-powered mobility company, helping shape the smart, safe, and sustainable transport revolution of the Industry 4.0 era.
In step with Vietnam’s ambition to join the world’s top 30 innovators by 2045, Michelin is deploying artificial intelligence, smart analytics, and connected solutions to transform everything from fleet management to production efficiency.
The company’s strength lies in its ability to collect, cross-compare, and mine massive datasets—turning insights into actionable outcomes. This intelligence feeds directly into Michelin’s AI-led ecosystem, where sensors, predictive algorithms, and connected platforms work in tandem to improve safety, performance, and sustainability.
Turning Tires Into Data Platforms
Michelin’s Connected Fleet business is a prime example of how the company is evolving from manufacturer to mobility partner. By uniting three acquisitions—Sascar (Brazil), Nextraq (US), and Masternaut (Europe)—Michelin now manages data for over a million trucks and vans worldwide.
This connected ecosystem enables predictive maintenance through the Smart Predictive Tire solution, which uses sensors and machine learning to detect wear and tear before failure. The benefits are tangible: reduced downtime, lower fuel costs, and fewer CO₂ emissions. It’s no surprise the solution earned an I-Innovation Award at the SOLUTRANS 2023 exhibition.
The model represents a broader shift toward “tires-as-a-service”—a pay-per-use framework that blends hardware, software, and data-driven insight to improve fleet efficiency.
AI Meets Industry 4.0
Inside its factories, Michelin is going all-in on AI and robotics. By harnessing machine learning for complex handling of flexible composites, the company is reimagining how tires and materials are manufactured.
To scale these digital capabilities globally, Michelin partnered with Microsoft to integrate energy optimization solutions across its plants. This collaboration aims to cut emissions, boost efficiency, and accelerate progress toward Michelin’s net-zero goal by 2050.
Sustainability at the Core
Michelin’s “All Sustainable” vision places People, Profit, and Planet at the center of its strategy. The company aims to:
- Use 40% renewable or recycled materials by 2030,
- Halve CO₂ emissions from 2010 levels, and
- Reach 100% sustainable materials and net-zero emissions by 2050.
In Vietnam, Michelin is already walking the talk. The company has:
- Reduced CO₂ emissions by over 50% by switching to sea freight and renewable energy,
- Eliminated plastic packaging for motorcycle tires, saving 300,000 kilograms annually, and
- Cut 3,700 tons of CO₂ each year through biomass boilers and solar energy at its Binh Duong plant.
Managing Director Jason Tan Jing Shen underscores this mission:
“We aim to build a world-class organization that champions a sustainable tomorrow—through innovation, talent, and environmental responsibility.”
Innovation Beyond Tires
Michelin’s sustainability journey extends far beyond mobility. The company’s Polymer Composite Solutions unit is developing bio-based resins, active membranes, and advanced reinforcements, alongside strategic ventures like:
- Symbio – advancing hydrogen mobility,
- ResiCare – producing bio-based materials, and
- WISAMO – pioneering wind-assisted propulsion for maritime transport.
Meanwhile, Michelin continues to expand its Lifestyle portfolio, from the globally renowned MICHELIN Guide and its Green Star and MICHELIN Key awards to a growing lineup of consumer goods—from travel accessories to cycling gear.
A Connected, Carbon-Neutral Future
Michelin’s transformation marks a broader trend in industrial innovation—where data, sustainability, and intelligence merge into a single operating model. As the company redefines what it means to move efficiently and responsibly, its AI-first approach may well serve as a template for the next generation of industrial giants.
In an era where every journey leaves a data trail, Michelin’s mission is clear: to make every kilometer count—for business, people, and the planet.
