Confluent (Nasdaq: CFLT) wants to move enterprise AI from the lab to the production line. Today, the data streaming company announced Streaming Agents, a new Confluent Cloud capability for Apache Flink® that makes it easier to build and scale AI agents that monitor, reason, and act on live data.
The pitch: enterprises can skip “prototype purgatory” by unifying real-time data pipelines with AI workflows. Instead of static copilots or fragile proofs-of-concept, companies get event-driven, always-on AI agents capable of acting with fresh business context.
“Even your smartest AI agents are flying blind if they don’t have fresh business context,” said Shaun Clowes, CPO at Confluent. “Streaming Agents simplify the messy work of integrating tools and data, giving organizations a foundation to deploy AI agents that actually move the needle.”
IDC data backs up the urgency: the average company ran 23 generative AI pilots over the past two years—but only three made it to production, with just 62% meeting expectations. The culprit? Complex, brittle integrations that starve agents of reliable data.
How Streaming Agents Work
Streaming Agents plug directly into Kafka + Flink pipelines, delivering:
- Tool Calling via Model Context Protocol (MCP): Lets agents invoke databases, SaaS apps, or APIs for context-aware automation.
- Secure Connections: Pre-built integrations with models, vector DBs, and external systems—credentials protected, connections reusable.
- External Tables & Search: Enrich streaming data with sources like REST APIs or RDBMS for higher accuracy in RAG and vector search apps.
- Replayability: Test and refine agents safely with real-world data via A/B tests and dark launches.
Confluent positions Streaming Agents as a “real-time nervous system” for enterprise AI—handling high-volume events, collaborating across systems, and responding instantly to changing conditions. Example use case: dynamic ecommerce pricing that continuously adjusts against competitors in real time.
Why It Matters
Agentic AI has become the next frontier in enterprise automation, but most frameworks still lack the real-time context required for intelligent, reliable action. By merging data streaming with AI orchestration, Confluent is betting it can unlock not just efficiency gains, but entirely new business models powered by autonomous decision-making.
Streaming Agents are available now in open preview via Confluent Cloud.
