Axon (Nasdaq: AXON), the global public safety technology leader best known for its TASER devices and body-worn cameras, is extending its reach to the very first stage of emergency response: the 911 call. The company announced a definitive agreement to acquire Carbyne, a cloud-native emergency communications platform serving agencies that collectively protect over 250 million people worldwide.
The $625 million deal, expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, marks a major step in Axon’s mission to modernize every layer of public safety, from the first call for help to courtroom resolution.
From “Call for Help” to “Moment of Intelligence”
Carbyne’s technology has become one of the leading modern call-handling platforms, offering cloud-based routing, redundancy, and real-time data visibility for emergency communications centers (ECCs). Its system helps agencies stay online during outages, route calls more efficiently, and access crucial information—such as live video or geolocation—faster than ever before.
By combining Carbyne’s next-gen call management with Prepared by Axon, the company’s AI-driven situational awareness platform, Axon plans to launch Axon 911 — a fully integrated ecosystem that unifies callers, dispatchers, and first responders.
“Every year, more than 240 million 911 calls are made in the U.S., and in too many cases, vital information is lost between the call and the response,” said Rick Smith, Axon Founder and CEO. “By uniting Axon’s 30-year legacy of innovation with Carbyne’s cloud-based platform, we’re giving call takers and dispatchers instant visibility and connecting them directly to officers in the field. It’s how we transform a call for help into the first moment of intelligence.”
Closing the Gaps in Emergency Response
Once complete, the combined platform aims to give public safety professionals a continuous stream of real-time intelligence—from the instant a call is received to on-scene response, investigation in Axon Evidence, and eventual judicial resolution. That holistic integration could redefine how agencies manage time-sensitive incidents, particularly as AI and cloud adoption accelerate across public sector IT.
Carbyne CEO Amir Elichai, who will continue to lead the platform under the Axon umbrella, called the deal a milestone for global emergency response modernization. “Joining Axon allows us to scale our mission globally and integrate more deeply into the broader public safety ecosystem,” he said. “Together, we’ll help agencies save time, reduce uncertainty, and improve outcomes for the people and communities they serve.”
Why It Matters
While AI has already transformed policing and evidence management, 911 infrastructure remains one of the least modernized parts of public safety—often reliant on outdated, on-premises systems. By moving call handling to the cloud and layering in real-time analytics, Axon 911 positions itself as a next-generation, AI-ready command center for emergency communications.
Industry observers see the acquisition as both a technical evolution and a strategic expansion, deepening Axon’s presence in the emergency management stack just as cities worldwide invest heavily in digital transformation and resilience planning.
With Carbyne’s software now under its wing, Axon is no longer just the company that records what happens in the field—it’s aiming to shape what happens from the moment a call comes in.
