Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic buzzword—it’s rewriting the rules of how work gets done. A new global study reveals that AI isn’t just automating tasks; it’s becoming the backbone of what researchers are calling the “Transformation Age,” where projects themselves drive organizational and societal change.
The 2025 Global AI in Project Management Survey, the largest study of its kind, gathered insights from 870 professionals across 97 countries. Conducted by Prof. Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez and Dr. Ricardo Viana Vargas, the research shows AI adoption in project management is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. More than 60% of professionals are already experimenting with AI tools, while over half of organizations have formally integrated AI into their project delivery workflows.
Early adopters are seeing tangible results: project timelines shrink by up to 25%, and teams report measurable improvements in forecasting, resource management, and risk mitigation. “The future of work is project-driven—and increasingly, it is AI-powered,” says Nieto-Rodriguez. “AI should not be used just to cut costs, but to unlock human creativity and enable more meaningful, value-creating work.”
Far from replacing project managers, AI is emerging as a powerful assistant that enhances leadership. “AI will empower managers to lead transformation and drive measurable results,” adds Vargas.
The stakes are high. Globally, $48 trillion is invested in projects annually. Even modest efficiency gains from AI could translate into trillions in added value. But the study also highlights a human hurdle: cultural resistance and lack of trust now outpace technical barriers. In other words, successful transformation depends as much on people as it does on technology.
For organizations navigating a rapidly shifting landscape, the message is clear: AI is no longer an optional upgrade—it’s a strategic lever for competitive advantage. As AI-powered projects become the norm, leaders who embrace the technology while cultivating trust and creativity will likely define the next era of work.
