1. Camunda emphasizes orchestration across people, systems, and devices. Why is this holistic integration critical for enterprise agility?
Enterprise agility depends on people, systems, and devices being coordinated into unified, end-to-end processes. Too often, these different pieces – which also include AI tools and services by the way – are implemented in silos. Think about all the microservices, disconnected robotic process automation (RPA) bots, legacy systems, or department-specific tools combined with human tasks, which fulfill certain steps within a process… As a result, automation becomes fragmented, requiring a lot of human intervention to fix issues in these automations.
Process orchestration solves this challenge by connecting AI agents, humans, systems, devices, and legacy technologies into cohesive business processes. It ensures every task – automated or manual – happens at the right time, with the right oversight, and in the right context.
Think of process orchestration as the conductor in an orchestra. Process orchestration acts as the intelligence guiding each participant or system, ensuring they work together harmoniously and according to a defined logic or plan.
2. Can you define agentic orchestration? How does it differ from traditional process automation?
Agentic orchestration combines the control of deterministic orchestration with the adaptability of dynamic orchestration. Deterministic orchestration – the traditional way of process orchestration – is using predefined logic such as rules, branches, and conditions mapped in advance. It’s reliable and cost-efficient, making it ideal for high-volume tasks with predictable outcomes. In regulated industries, it also provides the repeatability and transparency needed for compliance. However, it lacks the flexibility to handle exceptions, ambiguity, or change.
In contrast, agentic orchestration allows enterprises to route straightforward tasks through deterministic logic, while reserving AI-driven flexibility for more complex or variable scenarios. This layered approach maintains transparency, auditability, and cost control, ensuring AI is only used where it creates real value.
3. Enterprises today face growing process complexity. How do you help teams cut through that complexity while still maintaining governance and scalability?
Today’s digital infrastructures are increasingly complex, interconnected, and automated. Organizations manage about 50 endpoints to execute tasks involved in business processes – a 19% increase over the past five years. This growing complexity, combined with a lack of control and transparency over AI implementations, heightens compliance risks, which could lead to “Automation Armageddon” if left unchecked.
Our agentic orchestration and automation platform simplifies process complexity by coordinating all tasks within an end-to-end business process into a single process flow. By orchestrating AI applications and services like any other endpoint, organizations can operationalize AI across the enterprise and maximize ROI while remaining compliant and in control.
4. How important is transparency and explainability when orchestrating AI agents in high-stakes business processes?
In high-stakes business processes, transparency and explainability are non-negotiable because they ensure processes run smoothly and remain auditable. When operationalizing AI agents within an existing automation strategy, organizations must be accountable and able to explain AI-driven decision-making, and in some cases, maintain tight guardrails.
Process orchestration provides full visibility into end-to-end processes along with an audit trail to verify decisions and ensure compliance with industry-specific regulations, data privacy laws, and emerging AI laws. Depending on the level of regulation, organizations can scale agentic AI use up or down and implement additional human-in-the-loop checks for finer control. For instance, AI might flag anomalies for human review before final approval.
5. What’s next for AI + automation space? Are there any upcoming features, partnerships, or platform enhancements that customers should look out for?
There’s a lot of noise in the market around AI, but most companies are still missing a practical way to apply it safely and effectively inside their core operations. That means embedding AI into business processes at scale and without losing control.
With that in mind we’re always optimizing our platform. We’ll release new capabilities in October at CamundaCon in New York City. If you want to experience them first hand, join us – in-person or online, just go to camundacon.com to sign up.
6. Lastly, what mindset shift is required for organizations to successfully transition from process automation to agentic orchestration?
Organizations must shift from just “throwing in AI” to applying it deliberately within orchestrated, controlled processes. AI promises efficiency, but without careful orchestration, it can introduce unintended costs and risks.
Also important to note: Not all processes require – or benefit from – advanced AI agents or large language models. Much of AI’s value comes from knowing when to use it and how to control it. This is why understanding the differences between deterministic, dynamic, and agentic orchestration is key.
Successfully transitioning to agentic orchestration where AI and humans co-pilot processes requires organizations to orchestrate both deterministic and dynamic workflows with intention and control.
