Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET) has published its sixth annual Year in Review, offering one of the most detailed snapshots of Internet trends, traffic patterns, and security developments in 2025. The report highlights dramatic growth, AI activity surges, and major cybersecurity milestones, providing a window into how the global Internet evolved over the past year.
“The Internet isn’t just changing, it’s being fundamentally rewired,” said Matthew Prince, CEO and co-founder of Cloudflare. “We blocked attacks that redefined what ‘scale’ means and observed traditional online business models face stark challenges.”
Key Internet Trends from 2025
Global Traffic Surges: Internet traffic grew 19% year-over-year, reflecting the increasing role of digital connectivity in work, commerce, and entertainment.
AI Bots Dominate: Google’s crawling bot emerged as the single largest source of automated traffic, overshadowing all other AI bots and fueling debates around AI resource consumption and data scraping practices.
Cybersecurity Shifts: Civil society and non-profit organizations became the most attacked sector for the first time, likely due to sensitive user data and potential financial exploitation. Meanwhile, over 25 record-breaking DDoS attacks highlighted the rising scale of cyber warfare.
Post-Quantum Encryption Gains: To protect against emerging threats, post-quantum encryption now secures 52% of all human Internet traffic—a significant step toward future-proofing global digital security.
Outage Insights: Government actions triggered nearly half of major Internet disruptions worldwide, while outages caused by cable cuts dropped almost 50%, and power-related outages doubled.
Connectivity Leaders: European nations led in Internet speed and quality, with average download speeds exceeding 200 Mbps. Spain topped global rankings for overall Internet performance.
Cloudflare Radar, the company’s free analytics platform, powered much of the report, drawing on anonymized data from Cloudflare’s global network, which spans 330+ cities in 120+ countries, and its widely used 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver.
Implications for Enterprises and Developers
For businesses, the data underscores the growing importance of AI readiness, robust cybersecurity measures, and resilient network architecture. Enterprises must prepare for the dual challenge of harnessing AI-driven traffic while defending against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
“With a huge percentage of the Internet running through Cloudflare’s network every second, we have a unique responsibility to help navigate these changes and build a better Internet for everyone,” Prince added.
The Year in Review reinforces the accelerating pace of Internet transformation, where AI, connectivity, and cybersecurity intersect, shaping the infrastructure and strategies enterprises must adopt to thrive in the digital age.
